How Do You Care For Your Custom Sleep Appliance?

How Do You Care For Your Custom Sleep Appliance?

san antonio oral appliance

When you have issues sleeping at night and feel exhausted during the day, then you may need treatment to enjoy a good night’s rest and feel more rested and alert. We can offer treatment with a custom sleep appliance instead of a CPAP machine! Your Schertz, TX, sleep experts explain how to care and maintain your custom sleep appliance, so you can enjoy a good night’s rest again!

When You Need Sleep Apnea Treatment

As we mentioned above, people with sleep apnea often feel exhausted during the day, and can experience moodiness, trouble concentrating on tasks, or issues with their memory. Sleep apnea interrupts your REM sleep multiple times in the night, even if you don’t realize this is happening, so you feel tired during the day. You may experience chronic snoring, the daytime issues we discussed, and problems with waking suddenly gasping for air or choking. When you encounter these issues, then contact our team for a diagnosis. We can offer an at-home test and a board-certified sleep physician will interpret the results and choose the best treatment option. For many, this will be an oral appliance.

Your Custom Oral Device

The oral appliance will look like a mouthguard and fit like one too. The device is crafted based on digital images and impressions we take of your smile, so it not only fits comfortably, but offers care with precision and accuracy. The device simply moves your jaw forward to keep air passages open and free of obstruction caused by sleep apnea. You feel more rested and alert during waking hours, and avoid the eventual strain on your immune system, and heart health. But once you receive your device, how do you keep it in good working order, so you continue to enjoy better rest?

Caring for Your Custom Sleep Device

We recommend taking time each morning to clean the appliance with a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste. You should clean all surfaces inside and out. Every couple of weeks clean it with a denture or orthodontic retainer cleaner to really destroy any harmful oral bacteria. You can also use soap and water too. Some devices need to be stored dry, others wet, so be sure to follow the instructions we provide. Leave the device out of reach of pets and children! In the first few weeks, we may need multiple adjustments to ensure proper breathing and snoring cessation, so be patient!
